Organizing the Flight
We will fly our 737-700, but you can fly any of your favorite aircraft as long as you cruise with Mach 0.78.
For the FS98 users, that are not A
Se pilots, we suggest to use Scenery Finland v2.0. You can find this scenery at www.fsnordic.com.Although we cannot keep someone from using FS98 we have to warn that we will use gates, parking stands, marked taxiways and this stuff does not exist in the FS98 LGAV scenery in such a detailed manner. You could of course start from non gate parking stands and just take care to have an airport chart to see the taxiways.
For FS2000 users it is imperative to have Athens El. Venizelos LGAV Airport scenery by George Dorkofikis and Ted Katranas since it is the only one that has all parking stands integrated and we will use them quite well. Unfortunately there is no detailed airport scenery for Rovaniemi EFRO and we will have to settle down with the default FS2000 scenery.
FS2002 users should use the LGAV scenery by George Dorkofikis, but they should take care to install the special FS2002 patch, which makes the standard FS2000 scenery compatible with FS2002.
2. Registration
By making your registration to our Event, you will receive a Special Info Package that will include all necessary bits of personal information you need to fly with us with no problem at all. Included in this package will be your assigned time slot, assigned gate for your departure from Athens El. Venizelos (LGAV), the flight plan in SquawkBox and FS Navigator 4.x format plus the official format flight plan.
It is not obligatory to register, but doing so you let us know the magnitude of pilots participation, you save time on your flight’s prepation AND you give us the opportunity to organize every detail in such a way that will magnify the fun factor, due to accurate reality simulation.
All you have to do is write your Full Name, Callsign, your e-mail address, Country of origin, Flight Simulator type you utilize, Aircraft you plan to fly with as well as the Time you wish to depart from Athens and e-mail them at fodim@hol.gr. We will try to satisfy your wish for your time of departure but only if this slot is not established for another pilot that has opted for it prior to your registration. All registrations will be treated on the "first come - first served basis". Have under mind that the first departure time slot is set for 16:40 UTC (18:40 Local Hellas Time) and the rest will follow with a 3-5 minutes interval depending on the final number of registrated pilots. It will be quite difficult to intervene in this slot procedure once it is started and if you would not like to expect your turn after all pilots have departed Please Do register !!
Be sure to have the latest AIRAC navigation data installed in your SB. Also if you use FS Navigator 4.x take care and update its airway and intersection databases. You can do this from Prabal’s Navigation data or NavData. (For links to both sites check our Links page.)3. Pre – Connection Procedures - On Line flight
Prior to your connection here is a piece of advice that could prove to be wise. Utilize the ServInfo, a MUST HAVE utility created by Michael Frantzeskakis (check our Links Page) and find out which of the active servers has the smallest ping time for you. You should choose to connect to this server in SquawkBox. Although this is already a standard procedure for the regular and experienced On-Line Flight Simmers, we mention it, so that we reduce the lag factor to the minimum possible level.
As mentioned above, we will connect to VATSIM network and having contacted the vACCs engaged in our route, we hope that all of them will appear with the exception of Yugoslavia and FYROM that have not created a vACC in VATSIM yet. For the record, you are supposed to know all details about on-line flying otherwise you better leave it for next year when you will be more experienced ;).
4. Meeting Point-Communications
We will meet at the apron of Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (LGAV) at 16:10 UTC (Zulu), which is 18:10 Local Greece Time, on Saturday 29th of December 2001. Remember that we will apply time slots and assigned gates for our departures. If someone misses his/her time slot, he/she will have to wait until another one is available and assigned by ATC. Rest assured that controllers will honor the slot system. SO BE PUNCTUAL.The whole procedure will start at 16:30 UTC (Zulu) and the first departure slot will be 16:40 UTC (Zulu). On connect with VATSIM be sure that you have your Squawk on stand by and please have your aircraft positioned in the assigned gate prior to this event. Not a big deal after all… We will meet in A
Se’s company frequency which is rw.kapatel.gr/ase . This will be our check-in frequency. We just announce our presence and when time comes we all switch to the ATC post to start our departure procedure. PLEASE set your reality preferences to “IGNORE CRASH” while on the ground. No reason why we should lose time by unpredictable aircraft (pilots ?) behavior in LGAV’s or EFRO’s Apron.Connecting to VATSIM network does not mean that voice capability is mandatory. All controllers will provide ATC services even to text-only-able pilots. But… voice makes things much easier for all of us and is one step closer to reality. So please take care and be Roger Wilco able for this flight.
Also in case you use voice, do not forget to change the voice channel/program when you change to another controller, although SquawkBox 2.3.4 and above does this automatically. It is a commonly made mistake to change your com frequency to another controller and stay tuned to the previous controller voice channel.
Try to use radio laconically and speak loud (not too loud) and clear. You must have your system well tuned in order to take the maximum out of it.. Make some testing of your settings. You must also understand that not all of people have English as their native language…. Just for this reason please use standard ATC phraseology as it will facilitate things a lot. Clear, Simple and Effective communication!
In FIRs that their ATC is not manned we will return to our company official RW freq (rw.kapatel.gr/ase) and we will leave for another ATC voice frequency when it is available.
5. Aegean Seagull Log Book and Santa ClausWe remind you that you do not have to be a qualified Aegean Seagull pilot to participate in our flight, BUT you must be good at flying your aircraft. Have under mind that ASe is an advanced virtual airline system and its pilots fly with the highest standards available in the FS community. That means that the fun factor will be greatly increased. It is a good opportunity to have a good taste of our operations level and perhaps apply to join us.
6. Flight plan

7. IFR details-Info
Transition Altitude for Athens Eleftherios Venizelos is 9000 ft
Transition Altitude for Rovaniemi Airport is 5000 ft.
Something else is that if the controller tells you that you under radar control and you will be given radar vectors, please, don’t start saying “BUT why? I have the standard published procedure” etc….You will comply with his will, respecting his offer to our hobby.
Duration of the Flight will be approx. 4 hours and 40 minutes from engine start up to engine shut down, not counting the delays that may happen due to increased traffic on ground in Athens.
9. Cruising Flight Level and Mach Number
First of all we would like you to participate with aircraft that are able to cruise with M 0.78 at FL330. This will be the standard Flight Level and airspeed for all of us. This way we will ensure that the final Finland ATC will receive our flight within a specified time window and will not have to wait for us being widely dispersed. Now if you insist to fly with a slower aircraft then you should select a lower FL to keep clear of the M0.78 main stream. In a case a faster aircraft is your choice then please select a higher Flight Level.
10. Alternative AirportOur Alternative Airport will be Oulu EFOU around 100 nm south of Rovaniemi .
11. Fuel on board
For Boeing 737-700 users such as Aegean Seagull’s “Island of Skiros” 37.000 lbs of fuel should be enough to cover the whole flight plus 45 mins of holding plus diversion to the alternative airport of Oulou (EFOU) plus medium delay on Athens ground.
Some details about missed approach…
This is something that every pilot, who respects himself, should pay some, at least some, attention. As weather conditions are not a controlled parameter to a flight, you can very easily engage a situation well under the minima for the decision altitude in your destination. In that case we execute a missed approach and we either go for a holding pattern and a second approach later either climb and fly direct to the alternative airport. The latest happens when the main destination airport is closed or there is no chance for the weather to become better.
This is the reason why you should study the missed approach pattern at both the original destination and alternative airports (the first one in case of an emergency return). If a controller will have many aircraft in his airspace, it will be quite difficult for him to pay the extra attention needed to you. Besides this way we are as real as it gets…
13. Saving your flight regularly – Reconnection procedures
We strongly suggest you to save your flight in regular time intervals. This way you can ensure that even if a reboot is inevitable, then you will be within close range of the other aircraft. If disconnected from VATSIM network, take care to ask permission to reconnect from the ATC to avoid being overrun from another aircraft passing the point you disconnect on the very same time with you. Even better would be positioning your aircraft in a higher FL and connect. After you are sure that everything is clear, you may descend again to FL330.
14. Wrapping things upOur dear Pilots and friends, we think that we have already introduced something special in the history of Aegean
Seagull vAS. We hope that you will honor our efforts and fly with us. As it is a Special Event, you are free to invite friends of yours, even if they are not Aegean Seagull Pilots. We want to share this event with as many pilots as possible, because we want to create a strong tradition for our Virtual Airline. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any additional information or question you might have.
PLEASE, DO NOT FORGET TO REGISTER
Finally our best wishes for
Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Happy New Year to you and your family !!!.
